I recently received a call from one of our boat builders, Neil LeBlanc, in Lr. Wedgeport, Nova Scotia (
www.leblancboats.com). He had been asked to do a presentation at a local French immersion Jr. and Sr. High School (Grades 7 to 12, Ecole de Par en Bas) and I was delighted that he thought of calling me. This kind of thing does not happen aIl that often and I am still fired up after having attended COMITT '08.
I know Neil fairly well and he and his 2 brothers, Kevin and Leo (indeed their whole crew!) are very kind hearted, hard working, and passionate folk...particularly when it comes to the boats they build. They're always sincerely striving to satisfy their clients with quality product and servce...it's the Acadian way. They treat everyone "the very best".
So, Neil's intent was to approach this presentation to the school kids in the same manner. I spent the day with him yesterday and between us, we came up with what I think is a crackerjack presentation. Our plan is to promote, at every opportunity, an interactive discussion. We're going to bring to bear printed information, power point information and images (including images of different stages in cons't and really snappy images of different completed boats, some underway), and we'll have stuff with us (models, boat parts, etc.) that the kids will be able to touch and feel. Plus, Neil can speak both English and French and he can answer just about any question that the kids may want to ask about boatbuilding in either language. I'm there mainly to speak about the NS Boat Builder Apprenticeship Program (BBAP) and answer any questions in this regard.
Neil and I are looking forward to this opportunity. I'll come back in here afterwards and let you know how we did.
Cheers ~ Chip Dickison, NSBA Training Coordinator
P. S. - the files attached are shots of my mug and the mug shots of the LeBlanc Bros. I have to admit, that Hillary gal who presented at COMITT '08 made a great point about a whole new way of thinking and she has really got me stretching my comfort zone here! :-)
