Getting access to Volvo Penta parts, engines and programs

For those of you that are involved in a learning institution offering marine programs, we have developed what we call the Volvo Penta Access program. It is very similiar to a dealer agreement, in that you must provide financials and sign a 3 year contract with us. Once approved, you can then buy engines, drives or parts as needed, but just as importantly you have access to our extranet called the Volvo Penta Partner Network. This is an essential tool to handle communication with us as far as par… Continue

Hi Rick,
My name is Mark W. Corwin & I teach a nighttime Marine Diesel Technology class at McFatter Technical Center in Davie, Fla. Five of the engines I currently have are Volvos: two 3cyl., two 4cyl. & one 6cyl. These engines get torn down to bare block & the students learn how to use micrometers, depth gauges, bore gauges, all types of precision measuring tools so that they can learn how & why the engine works & understand how to use the specs in the manual to rebuild the best engine possible. While the engine is apart we go through all the parts-pistons, rings, bearing shells, journals, etc.-so they will be able to figure out why a particular engine or part failed or why it has the wear patterns that it has. All engines have run before they got to them & have to run when they're done. At that point I start sabotaging all the engines, fuel systems, electrical, etc., for diagnosing & troubleshooting purposes.
Now that I've explained a little bit about the program my problem is getting parts. People locally seem to be too busy (which is a good thing) & I have to double up on the other engines because I can't get parts in a timely manner. Is there any way I could deal directly with the factory? We have a goverment grant- Bombardia & Mercury. I also need parts for Northern Lights generators with Luger engines & Westerbeke generators. Any help &/or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any suggestions or comments to enhance the class to better suit industry needs would be very much appreciated. For example: is there any way to set this class up so a student could be Volvo/Penta diesel engine certified upon successful completion of the course. Thank you!

I got to know Hilary Mason through a mailing list for educators in "virtual worlds" and I know I am far behind what they are doing. None of the stuff I've learned about New Media is too tough, but omigod -- there's so MUCH of it! And it changes almost daily. And doesn't "embed a widget" sound positively medieval?
